25th June 2002 THE VINES ARE LIVE AND WELL The Vines have at last set-off on their short UK tour, which winds up tommorow night (Thursday) in Leeds. The of course it's Glasto and the Big One (AKA Reading/Leeds!), and by all accounts the tour is going just dandy. Next Week: The Reviews Roll In! TOP OF THE POPS Don't forget this Friday on BBC2, it's Top Of The Pops, the weekly nadir of hot trash conveniently scheduled to haze our youth's minds for the duration of the weekend only to be kick-started back into consiousness by Songs Of Praise on Sunday evening. Anyway the point is the Vines are pushin' barrelling new single Get Free on it, so see ya there!![]()

24th May 2002 GET FREE ON TV! The excellent video to Get Free is on the telly now, as seen on MTV:2 and Kerrang, so keep them eyes peeled, and look out for the devil-eyes at the end, courtesy of the boy-possessed Craig. LIVE TOUR, GENUINE FREAKS Also, the dates that were previously reported as sold out, have infact NOT sold out, although if they, or any of the other dates do sell out, I'd reccomend contacting the venue direct, they often keep their own tickets and are the last to sell out as most people go straight to ticket agencies and the like.![]()
22th May 2002 VINES ON THE NME!About time too! ![]()

21th May 2002 READING/LEEDS FESTICALS!
The Vines have been announced to play the Reading and Leeds Carling Weekenders in August this year! They'll be playing on the first day, in the Radio One Tent, right about the time when Weezer will be on, but hopefully not at the same time. The Radio One tent is not that big, and is always rammed, so get down there! GLASTONBURY FAYRE
They're also playing on the Saturday afternoon at Glastonbury, over on the Other Stage. It's sold out already though, and The Vines are about the only decent band playing this year. Just go to Reading and avoid the circles of out of time drummers. Bloody drummers, who'd 'ave 'em eh? NEW SINGLE - GET FREE DETAILS!
The next single is of course 'Get Free' and is sounding awsome, but here's the details. It comes on CD and 7" vinyl, the CD features the extra tracks 'Down At The Club' and 'Hot Leather', and the 7" has the bonus track 'Blues Riff'. It comes out on July 17th, and features a Roman Coppola directed film clip, where the band get blown to peices and seem to be playing on some sort of rainy mountain! SOLD OUT!!!
The Glasgow and Manchester dates of the mini-tour next month are now sold! Of course, that don't mean you can't go, there will be black market tickets on eBay for about £400 in a matter of moments. Or then again, just mission it to Leeds, still tix for that one.![]()
15th May 2002 VINES AND THE EN.EM.Y
The online version of the NME's latest Vines report is HERE for your pleasure, it just sort of gives the meat and potatoes from the full article, which by the way is still available in the UK till Tuesday.![]()
14th May 2002 SCANDAL!!!
Finally the NME cottoned on, something was not right in Vineland! This Wednesdays issue has an excellent full page news item mascerading as a track-by-track run down of the forthcoming album, but is mainly about the contention within the band regarding Olliffe the ex-drummer. By the way Patricks explaination of the album is great, but the story is very close to the bone, especially if you've kept up to date with this whole mess. The full scan can be found HERE.'GET FREE' VIDEO
Thanks to www.the-vines.com, we can now slobber over the video to Get Free, the forcoming single in UK, US and Oz! Dance over to TheVines.com LIVE LIVE LIVE!
You know what this is all about, if not, gt on the blower and check 'em out!

10th May 2002 BREAKING NEWS
A new date at Leeds Cockpit on Thursday 27th June has been announced, so anyone in that part of the country you gotta get down there, or even if you're not from around there go anyway! Hmmm, Leeds, that's the one with the Harvey Nics innit?![]()
9th May 2002 THE VINES TO TOUR!
The Vines are to return, as expected, to the later this year for a tour and a festival appearance, although only dates have been anounced so far, and the festival date only hinted at. The club dates are as follows; Sheffield Leadmill - June 22nd
Manchester University - June 23rd
King Tut's Wah Wah Hut Glasgow - June 24th
Liverpool University - June 26th Hopefully this is just the start, and we'll get dates in London and Birmingham, it'd be sad to come all this was and not do! As for the festival dates, roughly in the words of the Heavenly website, "...one big festival in the south at the end of June..", which can only mean Glastonbury. This is ace news, however I think the all conquering Reading Festival would suit the Vines much better, just the punters, the atmos, and the rest of the line-up. Lets keep our fingers crossed for that, and with our powers combined, we can... errm, something, sorry, got carried away there. 'GET FREE' OUT AT LAST!
...sorry, couldn't resist that glaringly obvious NME-ism. The single will be released in the UK on July 16th on CD and 7", with B-Sides yet to be confirmed. It will be the second single proper after Highly Evolved, and will eventually be the first single in the US. Over in Australia, it was rumoured to be their debut single there, but promo copies of Highly Evolved have been doing the rounds and are already available in Sydney record stores, which suggests it'll be the next release over that way. MORE PICS!
As ever, this site is developing constantly, and the pics pages are the fastest growing thing since John Holmes. I've decided to do the right thing and tidy up the pics pages, making everything in thumbnails first, which makes it all quicker for you and for me.![]()

2nd May 2002 I'D RATHER HAVE A BOTTLE IN FRONT OF ME...
Hello and welcome to May! It's been an exciting couple of days with a load of great festival news, especialy the veritable event of the summer, Reading, being announced. Well, as we all know the initial line-up is but the tip of the slightly rank joint. There's at least another 100 bands to come, mostly the smaller acts and the second stage bands, which is worth keeping an eye out for as it tends to preview some quite brilliant acts, in the relative intimacy of a giant tent! BUT, there's one thing missing, The Vines aren't mentioned in any of the festival lin-ups. Why? There time is NOW, and the LP comes out this summer. Write to your local MP (I refer non-UK residents to their neaest British Embassy), and tell them the problem! ...THAN A FRONTAL LOBOTOMY
The Vines are about to embark on a mini-tour of the USA, you lucky people! Check out the news page at www.the-vines.com OH YEAH, VINES NEWS!
For those of you wanting a glimpse into the mind of Craig 'Mad' Nicholls, click HERE for a great interview by the RockFeedBack website.![]()
23nd April 2002 THE VINES FORUM - IMPROVED FORMULA!
The FORUM has been totally re-designed and can be found by clicking 'forum' up there on the title bar. It's dead easy to use, and once you've signed up, hey, go crazy! Or even if you just want to gimme some feedback, go ahead, it's yours.![]()
22nd April 2002 BAR BAR BAR!!
The Vines will be appearing in the next The Fly magazine, out May 1st, which is free and usualy found in indie record shops, hurrah! Plus, the new issue of Q Magazine, out now £3.30, has the band in it, innit, so go get. I'd recommend flicking through the new issue of The Face too, they normally jump on bandwagons about now, there's sure to be a mention in that. BRAND NEW DISCOG!
At last I've put some work into the only reason most people come to band websites, the Discography section, which I'm trying my hardest to stay up to date and all that jazz. HOT LEATHER/SUN CHILD
Apparantly, a number of copies of the limited single 'Hot Leather/Sun Child' have made their way over to the UK. This is a limited edition of 500 copies, and I guess alot would have stayed in Australia, where is was issued, so here it's going to be scarce. Take a look at you cover on my Discs page and go track it down!![]()
20th April 2002 VINES ON MTV:2 TOMMOROW NIGHT!
MTV:2 will be repeating 'the vines:in control' tommorow night at 8pm. Take a peek if you can, the songs they choose are brilliant! For our Australian readers, it's a bit like the guest spot on Rage but condensed into about 45 mins, and obviously 'cause it's MTV there's no inter-band fondling or bizarre justifications for their selections.![]()
18th April 2002 WATCH THE VINES ON THE TV
They're playing to the pop kids tommorow night at about 7pm, on Top Of The Pops (it's crap, but you gotta do it once!), thanks to the single Highly Evolved crashing into the UK Top 40 at 32. It's sure to be a memorable performance, hopefully shaking up the venue in the same way Muse did recently when they performed 'Bliss' to a stunned posse of teens and tossers. Also later on in the night, the Mojo magazine of TV shows, Later With Jools Holland, wil have them on doing 3 songs, including the single I'm sure, and possibly Get Free, that'll be the one to watch, let's hope Jools sticks his oar in with a bit of ivory-tinkling. As is traditional, nay compulsory!![]()
15th April 2002 ALL NEW SITE!
I've redesigned a little, not sure if it's a vast improvement, but at least it's a bit fresher. Tell me what you think! THE VINES RAWK IN OXFORD!
You heard that correctly sir, the show at the Oxford Zodiac was mindblowing and no mistake. The Libertines were pretty good for a support band, dunno about the (hot) leather jackets, but the toons were ace and the amps turned up to 11. The Vines came on to an underwhealing light show, but the moment was magical, testement to their incredible stage presence. The set list was long and varied, the songs all classics from start to finish, and the sounds just perfect. Craig was a genius madman as per usual, and the sold out venue was transfixed. Highlights for me were 'Get Free', 'Factory', 'Mary Jane', 'Country Yard' and '1969'...oh fuck it, all of them we're inspirational. Good to see the 'Sydney-massive' bopping along down the front too. Yeah yeah, you know all the words, hehe!! Photos on their way... READ THEIR ON THE ROAD DIARY!
Thanks to the NME.com, we can read Craig and Patricks entertaining diary of life on the road in England. Take a look here: PART 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7. THE VINES AT NUMBER 32 IN THE UK TOP 40 CHART!
Hurrah, thanks to everyone that bought the classic single 'Highly Evolved', it's gone straight to number 32 in our Top 40, which must be a first for an Australian bands debut release. They'll be playing Top Of The Pops in the UK this Friday nite. MORE PHOTOS!
Thanks to the live show in Oxford on the weekend, soon there'll be a load of new live photos, scans of stickers, postcards and promo material, plus a scan of the tour laminate and ticket stubs. Muchas gratias to Andy C and friends, you're legends!![]()
9th April 2002 THE VINES CD ON NEW NME!
It's out today, so get to it and buy!!! DAVID OLLIFFE INTERVIEW!
Go straight to the ABOUT page and enjoy a great Q & A session with ousted Viney drummer Dave. HIGHLY EVOLVED ON SHELVES NOW!
New single out, Highly Evolved can now be found on the shelves of all decent music stores, and most indie ones. Our Price failed to deliver however, so pou-marks for them, the scrubbers!![]()
4th April 2002 THE VINES IN NEW NME!
Get the new NME with Liam 'Arse' Gallagher on the front, and you'll find not only an ace 2-page interview with The Vines, with new photos, but an advert for next weeks paper, which includes a free Heavenly Records promo CD, with a Vines track on it, hurrah!
RADIO ONE SESSIONS
As most might know by now, everyday this week Lamaq will play a Vines track done in-session. So that's 3 down and 1 to go. I got the first one one Monday, and I got 'Mary Jane' from last night, but missed Tuesdays. Can anyone tell me what it was? Anyway, keep an ear out for tonights and Fridays, if anyone's actualy in after 8pm that night!![]()
30th March 2002 PICTURES EXPLAINED!
Liked what you've seen on the Pictures page, but asked yourself what the hell they all mean? Well fret no more, because I've added a detailed explanation to each an every one, hurrah! Oh yeah, and happy easter all. NEW SHOW ADDED!
There's a final show at the Zodiac in Oxford on Saturday 13th April, and the tickets are £7, get down there everyone! The NME ticket hotline have sold out, but you can phone the venue direct, and get them there, but be sharpish. The number for the Zodiac is 018 6542 0042. See you there! THE VINES ON RADIO ONE
Listen to Radio 1 on April 1st (this year, of course), in the evening, and The Vines are doing a session on Lamaq Live, which should be ace, they might even do some talking, fingers crossed!![]()
29th March 2002 NME SINGLE OF THE WEEK!
Yes, that hallowed rag of much influence, the NME, have given the new Vines single, 'Highly Evolved' Single Of The Week. Didn't Factory gat that too? Jeez, that's a 100% record, keep it up boys! However, beware the love of NME, it can turn nasty. Keep your wooden stakes and crosses handy. Check out the proof on NME.com or I've scanned in the article on the PICS page. BECOME A 'VINES ONLINE' MEMBER!
This is just a silly but cool idea I thought of, and it would be ace if more band sites did it. Here goes...I have set up a GALLERY of sorts, so that Vines fans from around the world can have their picture put on it, like them sticker machines covered in mugshots of it's previous users. I thought it might be cool and make people want to be invloved. All you have to do is e-mail me your photo in any format, and I can stick it in the GALLERY, which can be found here...REQUEST FOR PHOTOS!
Are there any Sydneysiders (or otherwise) out there who have photos lying around form Vines gigs past and present? I'd love to have a scan of them if you have! Cheers...![]()
25th March 2002 VINES T-SHIRTS
Well, only one actualy. It was made by me and is rather nice, and best of all for a band t-shirt, it actualy fits, and isn't XXL or something! Please tell me what you thing friends. COOL NEW PHOTOS!
With huge thanks to my main man Mike (give him a cheer!), we have access to some ace photos and artwork, so go straight to the PICS page, and see future classics like Craig enjoying some pre-fame Coke in Sydney... ALL NEW!
Yes, after much stressing and uploading, I finally got it all together, so take a stroll around - there's new pictures, live dates, a better forum and just a nicer and fuller feel to the place. Also, with some competition on it's way, I thought I'd better stay in the race and smarten up!![]()
14th March 2002NEW VINES ARTWORK - EXCLUSIVE!
Have a butchers at this awsome piece of art from the Vines forthcoming record, 'Sun child/Hot Leather'....but what's this? It's barely eligable?! Yes that's right, in the interests of the band, it's still a secret, soz! Oz Music Project - 'Factory' review
Anyone who hasn't checked out 'Factory' and it's b-sides for themselves yet, have a look at this review from these very shores, alot more satisfying than the 'new-Beatles/Nirvana'-esque hyperbole of the NME! Rex Records is a UK label who've already discovered the wealth of talent Australia has to offer with the Avalanches already gracing their back catalogue. This time around it is the relatively young Sydney band THE VINES that get the Rex treatment. Sounding like it was recorded on their little sisters' boom box, the three tracks here were recorded by the Vines themselves at home and they've certainly managed to enrich them with a health dose of lo fidelity. The title track is probably the weakest of the three with some heavy Beatles pop influence jumbling up with the sloppy garage rock but 'Ain't No Room' and 'Drown the Baptists' are considerably better. They are both shambolic garage rock songs with a little power pop and punk mixed through for good measure. Close your eyes and picture three guys in a suburban garage, the drummer is bashing away as hard as he can, the guitarist has the amp turned up to 11 and the singer is screaming away. Its a scene that is probably played out across the nation every Sunday afternoon but apparently these guys are fortunate enough to attract a bit of attention from UK 'know-it-alls' NME who declared them the 'Australian Strokes'. I'm not sure what that means exactly but there is enough promise here to raise expectations of their forthcoming (maybe hi fi?) releases.![]()
11th March 2002 NEW 'LIVE' PAGE
I've re-done the Live page, as more and more gigs are being played, and I was clearing my stuff out on the weekend and found a load of old cuttings from our local music rag Drum Media, with some old dates in. So now there's a Gigography, as well as Coming Up... gigs. I know they are supporting The Doves for a show, anyone know what show? Also, if you have any other old gigs to add to the list, please e-mail me!! AND FINALY...
I move away this Sunday, to merry England, where hopefully this page and any others I do will actualy improve, as I have access to better computers at home, hurrah! Also, I saw You Am I at Sydney Uni on Friday night, and Eskimo Joe at the Metro on Saturday night. You Am I were ace as ever, but it was Eskimo Joe who were just incredible, the sound was ace and they are just stars. Best of all, The Vines have supported both these bands in the past, infact I saw all 3 bands together at the Enmore, class!![]()
6th March 2002 THE VINES NEW ALBUM NAMED!
Yep, the NME reckon that the new Vines album will be called 'Highly Evolved', like the new single (out soon). Nice name, better than 'Is This That Which It Is Not, Innit' (no question mark). THE VINES GET LITTLE ADVERT IN NME!
In the 23rd Febuary issue of the NME, with Kylie on the front, the Vines get a little advert for their iminent 4 date mini-tour of the UK. It's on the first page of the gigs section, and uses the photo of 3 of the lads sitting on a ute of some kind, in what looks like Surry Hills. Also includes the release date of the new single, 'Highly Evolved', which by the way peaked at No 2 in NME's most wanted songs, hurrah.![]()
15th Febuary 2002
Just seen The Vines for the second time in a week, and they fuckin rocked (but you knew that!). The first was at the Houptoun Hotel in Surrey Hills, supporting Fur Patrol (who played with The Strokes last year), and Lavaland, who I reckon are average, but that's just me. It was great, but fairly obvious who the crowd was there to see. But the REAL gig came the following Friday in Enmore/Marrickville, at the pub, Vic On The Park (yes, it realy is on a park). The support was from the awsome The Meek, a local 3 peice, whose drummer did the singing (it's always the quiet ones, innit?), and played roaring and riff heavy rock, infussed with a little bit of the punk spirit, and best of all, the songs were short, so you never got bored. They should go far, if there's any justice in this world! The next band, Silo, seemed to attract a bit of a crowd, but that might have been coz of the two lovely laydees in the band, rather than the tunes, which were not realy to my taste. Of course by the time The Vines came on, the pub was buzzing and the beer was well and truly flowing (unfortunatly the pie-warmer was turned off, so stomachs were also rumbling). Check out the gigs section for a set-list, but I can tell you that the show was incredible, and the band realy held your interest, even through the Jesus and Mary Chain-sounding cover of Outkast's 'Ms Jackson'!![]()
